Malaysia News: Two Navy Choppers Collided during training in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: killing all 10 crew members aboard, after their choppers collided mid-air over a naval base in Lumut, Perak on Tuesday (Apr 23) the navy said in a statement.

A video circulating on local media showed several helicopters flying in formation, when one of the choppers’ rotor clipped another before both aircraft crashed into the ground. Local police confirmed the footage was genuine.

Footage of the incident circulating on social media showed seven helicopters flying over the base in a loose formation. The camera then pans to a pair that had separated to the right.

The helicopters collided, the impact shooting out smoke and debris, before falling to the ground.

“The RMN urges the public not to share videos of the incident to preserve the sensitivities of the family and the investigation process,”

“All victims were confirmed dead at the scene and sent to the Lumut naval base military hospital for identification,” the navy said.

Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the aircraft — a maritime operations helicopter and a Fennec military chopper — were rehearsing for a parade celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Royal Malaysian Navy, due to be held on Saturday.

Efforts were underway to verify the identities of the crew members killed, all of whom were below the age of 40, he told reporters.
